Our Roots:
In 1890 the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia saw a growing need for orphaned children in the Spokane community. In order to help meet the needs of these children they built an orphanage, St. Joseph Children’s Home. The sisters took in children whose parents could no longer care for them, as well as those who were orphaned. They never turned anyone away, looking instead to the community to raise funds and supplies needed to support the children

Our Growth:
When the state transitioned the children into the foster care system, the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia changed their focus from providing day to day care and counseling to providing outpatient counseling to the children and their new families. Many of the children were for the first time being separated from their siblings, this was a difficult time for them and for their new families. The sisters were able to continue serving the children and saw the need to provide counseling to struggling families in the community around them as well. St. Joseph Family Center has been a place where families receive healing for the mind, body and spirit since that time.

Our Present:
Today, St. Joseph Family Center is a fully-licensed counseling, spirituality, healing arts and retreat facility with six on-site therapists and facilitators who provide counseling, anger management and parenting classes. St. Joseph Family Center focuses on healing the whole person by offering healing arts and physical wellness services such as yoga and massage. In 2009 more than 3,000 clients have benefited from our services through 7,300 visits, and over $167,000 has been given in fee-assistance.

Our Future:
We are constantly working to improve and expand our services and client outreach. This year we have experienced a 26 percent increase in attendance of psycho-educational classes, a 5 percent increase in total counseling clients and a 32 percent increase in medication management clients. Our newly expanded counseling facility will allow us to help meet the increasing need in the Spokane community. We are loyal to our community and strive to serve those seeking mental, spiritual and whole body wellness. |
